Barton Broad re-visited

Stalham Brass has its own island in the heart of the Norfolk Broads at Barton, created for it in 1900. The band used to play ‘See The Conquering Hero Come’ as the winner of the Wherry races crossed the line at the yearly Regatta. Although the Broad became polluted and silted up, the late Gerald Thirst MBE., father of Stalham’s current MD, Tim, remembered playing on the island as a boy. Tim and Stalham enjoyed the honour of continuing the tradition at the official unveiling of the Broad following its dredging and cleansing by the Broads Authority.

Said Tim: "We had just 48 hours notice to provide a band during a weekday, and it is a credit to the band that rather than let anyone down, 20 of its 40 players made special arrangements to be there."

Stalham featured on television for its troubles and was also captured on canvas by local artist Derek Harvey.
